Harold Hardrada

Harold Hardrada
King of Norway (1046-1066) who died fighting Harold of England at Stamford Bridge. He was also a Viking (q.v.) adventurer and hero of Scandinavian sagas. He served with the Varangian (q.v.) troops that fought with George Maniakes in Sicily (qq.v.) before fleeing to Kiev (q.v.) in 1042, after Constantine XI (q.v.) suspected him of supporting the rebellion of Maniakes. There he married the daughter of Jaroslav the Wise (q.v.). He returned to Norway, whose king he became, and he died at Stamford Bridge in 1066 in a vain attempt to defend his claim to the English crown.
